Press 53 Word Story Contest is a monthly writing contest organized by Prime magazine. The contest holds every month and each winning story gets selected for publication in the magazine.

October brings to mind long drives, harvest time, full moons, changing colors, falling leaves, Halloween, and beer. Did you know that at the end of Oktoberfest in Munich, everyone holds hands and sings John Denver’s “County Roads”? It could be true. Maybe that was a one-off? One thing is certain: October is here.

Here’s How To Enter For Press 53 Word Story Contest

Email your story directly to 53wordstory@gmail.com by the 15th  day of the month, midnight Eastern Time. NO ATTACHMENTS PLEASE! 

Your story should appear in the body of the email.

–Your story must be 53 words—no more, no less—titles are not included in the word count. 

Stories not meeting this rule will be disqualified. 

Send only stories; poetry with line breaks will not be considered. Hyphenated words count as one word.

–One submission per person. Since this is a free contest, there are no age restrictions.

–No attachments, please. Paste your story into the body of your email. Stories sent as attachments, or images embedded in the email, will not be considered.

–Titles are not included in the word count. If your story is not titled, we will create a title for publication.

–By entering this contest the author grants Press 53 First Serial Rights to publish the story in Prime Number Magazine. All rights revert to the author upon publication.

–Note: Be careful of word count. Hyphenated words count as one word. 

–Suggestion: Think of the prompt metaphorically, rather than literally. Be original. Surprise us! Oh, and have fun!

Our judges for the 53-Word Story Contest are the editors of Press 53 and Prime Number Magazine.

 Our winner for July will receive a copy of Blood a Cold Blue by James Claffey. The winning story will be published, along with the author’s *photo and 53-word bio, in Issue 199 of Prime Number Magazine on October 1, 2021 (*we will request your photo and 53-word bio if your story is our winner, so be prepared!).
