Maya Angelou, one of the most prestigious poet known for her civil activism has become the first back woman to appear on a US quarter, after the picture of the poet was featured in an iconic way on a coin on Monday.
In the quarter, an image of Maya Angelou was featured, with her arms lifted up sideways in a grand way. Coupled with her image, a bird in flight and a rising sun were also featured behind her, with a portrait of George Washington on the head of the quarter side.
A statement released by Janet Yellen, US treasury secretary goes thus:
“Each time we redesign our currency, we have the chance to say something about our country – what we value, and how we’ve progressed as a society. I’m very proud that these coins celebrate the contributions of some of America’s most remarkable women, including Maya Angelou.”
This is a moment of Pride!
