L'Homme Masqué (1851-c.1924) was born Jose Antenor de Gago y Zavala in Peru. He was a magician who performed on the stage mostly in France, with his mask on.

 The name, l'homme masque, was specifically derived from his mode of appearance, thus the name l'homme masque meaning, the "Man Of The Mask.

Aside using the l'homme masque name, he also performed under another name Marquis d'O or Marquis d'Orighuela.



L'Homme Masqué got married to Agnes Martini who hailed from Silesia in Germany. She performed a duo roles, as a wife and L'Homme Masqué's assistant on stage. She also "Zirka, the Queen of Cigarettes" as her stage appearance name.

Some special works are attributed to him, with some published in Magic without Apparatus, a book by Camille Gaultier. It was later translated by Jean Hugare in 1945. It was also generally accepted that be Downs Palm was created by him before he later taught T. Nelson Downs.

He had an imitator called "Willy le Masque". Sadly, L'Homme Masqué died in 1924.
