Addiction is a poem about self. It distills the poet's innate thoughts as he converses with himself, and reflects on his inability to be his own saviour. In the end, the poet questions rhetorically with a tone of regret as he meets his end.
ADDICTION
I tasted Poison before twilight
Then digged further into the bowl
to know if I really tasted Poison;
With my bland Tongue, & white Eyes
Each last gulp births a tougher urge
to take the entirety of this feeble bottle,
To fill my drum with this tantalizing liquid
& forget about my grand kingship
Each day I beg at myself
to save me from itself.
By letting go, I clutched,
perhaps, I can not save I
I am fading & I can not cry,
I am drowning & I can not shout.
Self, what have you done?
Save me, for I am heavily ladened.
