1. Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color Award

This award, hosted by Sisters in Crime, supports emerging crime fiction writers of color. It provides financial support and mentorship to help recipients advance their writing careers. The purpose of the grant is to support crime fiction writers in their career development. The winner of the grant may choose to use the grant for activities that include workshops, seminars, conferences, retreats, online courses, and research activities required for completion of the work.  

Deadline: Submissions run from February 1st to March 31st.

Category: Crime fiction writing.

Eligibility: Open to unpublished writers of color. If you've published two novels or ten or more short stories, you are not eligible for this contest.

Prizes: $2,000 grant for career development.

2. Terrain.org Contests

Terrain.org hosts multiple writing contests across poetry, nonfiction, and fiction, aiming to explore themes of place, climate, and justice. Submit your finest poetry, article, essay, fiction, article and video work that talks about the earth and our humanity. Submissions are accepted from around the world- they are particularly looking for Native, Brown, Black and other under-represented voices.

Deadline: General submissions of poetry, nonfiction, and fiction open on January 1, 2025 and close on March 31, 2025 for poetry and April 30, 2025 for nonfiction and fiction. ARTerrain and Letter to America submissions are open and are accepted year-round.

Categories: Poetry, nonfiction, and fiction.

Eligibility: Open to all writers.

Prizes: Varies by contest.

3. Foley Poetry Contest

Hosted by America Magazine, this contest celebrates outstanding poetry submissions from writers worldwide, with winning entries published in the magazine. Each entrant is asked to submit one poem of 45 lines or fewer. Poems should not be under consideration elsewhere. Poems may address any topic. 

Deadline: Submissions must be received between January 1st - March 31st 2025

Category: Poetry.

Eligibility: Open to all poets.

Prizes: The winning poet will be published in the print edition of America and will receive a $1000 cash prize. The winner will be announced in early June.

4. Deborah Rogers Foundation Writers Award

 One of the most prestigious awards for unpublished writers, this prize recognizes promising fiction and nonfiction authors. Submissions should take the form of 10,000 - 15,000 words of a work in progress, fiction or nonfiction. 

Deadline: The 2025 Writers Award will open up for entries from 1st January - 31st March 2025.

Category: Fiction and nonfiction.

Eligibility: Open to unpublished writers residing in the British Commonwealth and Eire.

Prizes: £10,000 for the winner; £1,000 for shortlisted authors.

5. Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest

This free contest, hosted by Winning Writers, rewards humor in poetry. Submissions can be published or unpublished.

8. AFMAC Media Workshop

 A specialized training program designed for media professionals and journalists looking to enhance their storytelling and digital media skills. The African Film and Media Arts Collective invites mid-career African filmmakers and media artists to apply for a groundbreaking workshop facilitated by renowned interdisciplinary artist and writer, Coco Fusco. The workshop will bring together 10 selected participants who will work together with Coco Fusco on several hands-on projects and collaborative storytelling. This in-depth one week in person session will be followed by five virtual sessions. During the program, participants will be mentored by leading African and diaspora filmmakers. At the end of the program there will be an exhibition of completed projects at Zeitz MOCAA in 2026. Any African artist with a career in cinema, filmmaking and media arts who wants to experiment with form and storytelling in a collaborative style should apply.

The Roy W. Dean Short Film Grant funds independent films that are unique and make a meaningful contribution to society.
