Emmy and Annie–nominated illustrator and director Shofela Coker was born and raised in Nigeria.
His animated projects include the acclaimed animated documentary Liyana and the Disney+ short film Moremi. Shof’s creative influences stem from his deep love for Yoruba mythology, traditional sculpture, and the printmaking traditions of Southwestern Nigeria.
At the beginning of his career, he worked as a character designer and digital sculptor for major video game studios, including Activision and Sony. As a freelancer, he has collaborated with global brands and studios such as Netflix, Disney, Lion Forge, West Studio, and Blue Ant, among many others.
Shofela is also a strong advocate for independent animation. He believes independent animation is vital because it allows creators to tell stories through their distinct voices and enables unconventional and experimental approaches to filmmaking.
His most recent work, Crocodile Dance, represents a bold creative stretch. The visually striking animated film brings the West African myth of Mami Wata to life, presenting an animated thriller that blends drama, science fiction, and subtle elements of horror.
