The streaming industry had a significant reveal a week ago following the long-awaited data for the most streamed artists across notable African countries. As expected, the Big 3, Burna Boy, WizKid and Davido, were enlisted on the Nigeria list. Surprisingly however, none of them topped the rankings despite their decade-long dominance, loyal fan base, and global influence. Instead, the top spot went to none other than Asake—a relatively late entrant to the game, whose distinct music style, Yoruba-infused lyrics, and consistency have edged him further to the forefront of the industry.

The list was shared by Spotify on their Instagram page, as it celebrated its fifth anniversary in Nigeria last week. Since their launch in Nigeria, the streaming company has recorded a total of 1.4 billion hours of streams in 2025 alone and 25 million playlists from the country.

According to the new data, Asake is the most streamed artist in Nigeria. He is followed by Wizkid, Seyi Vibez, Burna Boy, and Davido. Unlike the Big 3, whose fame is strongly driven by worldwide tours and international audiences, Asake has consistently released projects and hit songs during Nigeria’s streaming boom. Since Spotify rankings are based on total streams, especially local listening activity, his frequent releases and strong home support give him the edge.

Asake’s “Remember” is also the most streamed song in Nigeria. Other top songs include “Dealer” by Ayo Maff and Fireboy DML, “Awolowo” by Fido, “Kese (Dance)” by Wizkid, and “Lonely At The Top” by Asake.

Nigeria also has the highest number of user playlists compared to other African countries. In the last five years, Nigeria recorded 25 million playlists, while Kenya had 9.5 million and Ghana had 3.7 million.

Nigerian artists are also performing strongly in other African countries. In Kenya, songs like “Asiwaju” by Ruger, “Rush” by Ayra Starr, and “Bandana” by Asake and Fireboy DML were among the most streamed. In Ghana, Black Sherif and Odumodublvck topped the charts with “Wotowoto Seasoning", while Asake’s “Lonely At The Top” also ranked high.

Spotify’s five-year report shows that music streaming is growing rapidly in Nigeria, and Asake is one of the biggest stars driving this success.
