2021 International Booker Prize

On 30th of April, a longlist of 13 selected authors for the 2021 International Booker Prize was released. The long-list features African authors such as Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s and the French author of Senegalese descent, David Diop, who have their novels; "The Perfect Nine: The Epic of Gikuyu and Mumbi" and "At Night All Blood is Black" longlisted respectively.

The International Booker Prize is a book prize introduced in 2004 to complement the then Man Booker Prize. It is however, open to a single book translated into English from a foreign language and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland.

It confers a cash prize of £50,000 for the winning title, shared equally between author and translator.

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s "The Perfect Nine: The Epic of Gikuyu and Mumbi" was originally published in Gikuyu as "Kenda Muiyuru: Rugano Rwa Gikuyu na Mumbi" and was eventually translated into English by Ngugi himself, which indeed makes him the first author in the history of the International Booker Prize to earn a nomination for both writing and translation of the same work.

The novel was described as an “exhilarating feminist tale” as it re-imagines the epic of the Gikuyu origin story in which “99 suitors seek the hands of the nine warrior daughters who will ultimately decide which suitors are worthy of partnership.”

Also, Diop’s "At Night All Blood" is Blackcenters two Senegalese soldiers fighting on the side of the French in WW1. It was initially published in French as Frère d’âme in 2018 and later translated into English by Anna Moschovakis in 2020.

The shortlist will be announced on April 22, and the winners will eventually be announced on June 2.
