  • The American Scholar Magazine
The American Scholar is a quarterly literary magazine of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. It was established in 1932 and has bagged a number of the National Magazine Awards from the American Society of Magazine Editors. The literary magazine is based in Washington D.C.


The name "American Scholar" was coined from an oration given by Ralph Waldo Emerson before the American Society of Magazine Editors. According to its website:
"the magazine aspires to Emerson’s ideals of independent thinking, self-knowledge, and a commitment to the affairs of the world as well as to books, history, and science." The American Scholar began publishing fiction in 2006, and "essays, articles, criticism, and poetry have been mainstays of the magazine for 75 years."


However,The American Scholar don't accept  unsolicited poetry.

They also accept unsolicited  essays, fiction, articles that cover public affairs.

Pay Rate: American Scholar pay up to $500 per poem and up $250 for hose taken only for their website.

  • The Sun Magazine

The Sun is one of the most popular magazines that pay writers for their works and it's quite competitive in respect of acceptance. The Sun Magaizne was established in 1974 and its currently based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. They publish their issue every month.

According to the editor and co-founder of the Sun Magazine, Su Safransky:
" The overall goal for the publication is to create a feeling of connection between contributors and readers. 
Interestingly, each contributor's work reach at least 70,000 engaged readers as described by earlier contributor's. Also, Writing from The Sun has won the Pushcart Prize and been selected for the Best American Essays and Best American Short Stories anthologies.





Other literary works they accept: Essay, Interview and Fiction. They also accept photography.

Entry Fee: No entry fee required.

Pay Rate: $100 to $250 per poem.

  • The Capilano Review Literary Magazine

The Capilano Review is a Canadian tri-annual literary magazine located and published in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. They also pay writers for their works in different respective genres.They accept poetry with a maximum of 8 pages.


They are currently accepting submissions for their forthcoming issue titled "On Ritual"
Other literary works that they accept: art, poetry, fiction, essays, and interviews commissioned by the editor, as well as a small selection of unsolicited poetry and prose.


Entry Fee: None required.

Pay Rate: Selected entries will be paid $50 upon publication in their web folio




  • Colorado Review
Colorado Review accept submissions for poetry between August 1 and April 30. Nonfiction manuscripts and book reviews are read year-round. 

They do not accept simultaneous submissions or previously published works. They also accept translations of previously published or unpublished works.


However, if you've been previously published by Colorado Review in the last two years, they won't accept your work. They intend to feature new voices.

They accept no more than five poems with a maximum of 15 pages per poem. They however retain the first north America serial right.


Other literary works they accept: short stories and essays

Entry Fee: The fee for online submissions is $3.

Pay Rate: $10 per page of poetry, with a minimum of $30.





  • Boulevard Magazine

Boulevard is a biannual literary magazine. It has been described as "one of the half-dozen best literary journals" by Poet Laureate Daniel Hoffman in The Philadelphia Inquirer. Boulevard magazines released its first issue in 1985 and they accept submissions from November 1 to May 1.

They accept simultaneous submissions. Previously published works are not accepted.

You can either submit by post or submittable.

Entry fee: $3 for submittable. There is no fee to submit by post.

Pay Rate: minimum pay is  $50 per poem. The maximum is $250.




  • The New Yorker

The New Yorker is an American weekly magazine that feature many literary works including Poetry. The New York Magazine was established in 1925. It has won many awards such as GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage, James Beard Award for Food Coverage in a General-Interest Publication and Peabody Award among many other nominations.


The New York Magazine publishes 47 times annually. The poetry category is opened all year round.

  • Palette Poetry Magazine
Palette Poetry is one of the magazines most writers and poet resonate. They organize numerous contest in order to support writers and to encourage them.

According to Palette Poetry:
"We also warmly invite under-represented and marginalized voices to submit. Our aim is to be an accurate representation of the wonderful diversity of our community. Your voice is valued here, so to help do our part in moving forward the needle on equity in publishing, we've opened a special category for historically marginalized voices to send their work directly to our editorial team and receive a response within two weeks."

Palette Poetry holds first publication rights for three months after publication. They make an agreement with the author not to publish, nor authorize or permit the publication of, any part of the material for three months following first publication.

They also require acknowledgement in case the work is to be printed.

They accept not more than 5 poems.

  • Virginia Quarterly Review
The Virginia Quarterly Review is a quarterly literary magazine that was established in 1925 by James Southall Wilson, at the request of University of Virginia president E. A. Alderman.

According to Virginia Quarterly Review
" strives to publish the best writing we can find. While we have a long history of publishing accomplished and award-winning authors, we also seek and support emerging writers. A look at one of our latest issues will show you the diversity of voices we publish."

They publish poetry of all type and lenght. Simultaneous submissions are accepted. They read unsolicited works between July 1 - 31.

Other literary works they accept: short fiction, book review, essay  and non fiction.

Entry Fee: None required.

Pay Rate:pay $200 per poem, up to 4 poems. For a suite of 5 or more poems, they pay $1,000.







  • The Paris Review
The Paris Review is a quarterly English-language literary magazine established in Paris in 1953 by Harold L. Humes, Peter Matthiessen, and George Plimpton. 

They accept poetry submission quarterly during the months of March and September. Simultaneous submissions and previously unpublished works are accepted. All submissions must be in English.

They accept not more than six poem per submission.

Other literary works they accept: unsolicited submissions of fiction, nonfiction.

  • The Iowa Review
The Iowa Review is an American literary magazine that publishes poetry and often pleased to introduce new writers. It was established in 1970 and currently in the United States.

They accept submissions by post and submittable. They accept the simultaneous submissions and previously unpublished works.
