Since its early days, science fiction has played a unique role in human civilization. It removes the limits of what "is" and shows us a boundless vista of what "might be." Its fearless heroes, spectacular technologies and wondrous futures have inspired many people to make science, technology and space flight a real part of their lives and in doing so, have often transformed these fictions into reality. The National Space Society and Baen Books applaud the role that science fiction plays in advancing real science and have teamed up to sponsor this short fiction contest in memory of Jim Baen.

The annual celebration of the best books, bookshops and returns with an in-person and online event on 23rd May 2022.

The British Book Awards, aka The Nibbies, represent the absolute best of the book trade, showcasing the books, bookshops, agents and publishers who make this industry shine.

First launched in 1990 and now run by The Bookseller, the British Book Awards' two halves - Books of the Year and Book Trade Awards -  celebrate the books which defied expectations and the industry who brought them to readers.

The Books of the Year are unique in recognising that a book’s success is not down to just one factor. It is the author’s creative genius, the agent and publisher’s skill and support and the retailers who champion it, just to name a few. The shortlisted titles are unapologetically about success, but success is not always defined by who is at the top of the bestseller lists.

          Deadline: 3 February 2022

The Geneva-based International Publishers Association (IPA) today launches its call for nominations for the 2022 IPA Prix Voltaire for exemplary courage in upholding the Freedom to Publish and enabling others to exercise their freedom of expression.

Freedom to publish is one of the founding principles of the IPA. Its protection and promotion is one of IPA's key objectives. In many countries, publishers who provide authors with the means to disseminate their written ideas run the same risks as the writers themselves. Their work requires immense courage and a values-based, altruistic commitment. The Freedom to Publish is far from guaranteed around the world, with daily attempts by governments, extremists or private interests to intimidate, attack, imprison and even kill publishers.

The closing date for nominations is 27 March 2022

          What’s the prize?

The recipient will receive 10,000 Swiss francs funded by a range of generous sponsors:
